Classification
of diseases (including injuries) and operations (procedures)
is one of the most important functions of the medical
records department. A well organised medical record
section selects one of the best suited and widely
accepted International Classification Systems to code
and index diseases and operations for analysis of
medical data.
The
International Classification of Diseases, 9th
revision is widely accepted by the medical fraternity
the world over. Called ICD-9, the classification is
used to translate diagnosis of diseases and other
health problems from words to standard numeric codes
which permit easy storage, retrieval and analysis
of data.
